Good morning gardeners! March rains have temporarily halted progress in my garden and cleaning up the property. Hopefully I will get a few days of dry and warmer weather this coming week. At least I dont have to have my States Legislature pass a Bill that says I can have a garden on my property! There is a link to this story in my second post below.
Bill would let more back yards be like barnyards

Some barnyard animals could be moving into back yards under a bill that cleared a House committee Wednesday. The bill would allow homeowners to have chickens, milk goats and rabbits -- as well as sizable fruit and vegetable gardens -- so long as the goal would be to feed their families. Local governments wouldnt have much room to object, unless they have complaints about things like noise or odor that they're willing to take to court. Subdivision covenants would still apply, said Rep. Bobby Franklin (R-Marietta), sponsor of the Georgia Right to Grow bill.

Good morning gardeners! Here in Central Mississippi spring type weather will be here soon. I can feel the warmth at the other end of the tunnel! Highs for the next week will be in the 60s and 70s and I will be out in the garden and yard cleaning up. I will have around two or three weeks to get the garden area in shape before any plants get transplanted into the garden. Spring officially starts March 20. If you are just starting out gardening and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in....

Kos idiocy of the day
Wednesday 17th of March 2010 07:06:00 PM
Posted by admin / Under Gardening
The Daily Kos is trumpeting this as if it were Einstein explaining the theory of relativity: "As I discussed in my previous post, record-breaking snowstorms are not an indication that global warming is not occurring. In fact, we can expect there may be more heavy snowstorms in regions where it is cold enough to snow, due to the extra moisture global warming has added to the atmosphere -- an extra 4% since 1970. Snow is not the same as cold." Actually, the opposite is happening. There is less water in the air. That 4% figure is more IPCC Math. The...

Temperatures are hovering around 32. Streets are clear so far but wet. This is a good day to make some homemade chicken vegetable soup. Hurry up Spring!

Good morning gardeners! Another winter storm is heading for the Mid Atlantic and North East coasts! All of you FReepers in its path stay safe and warm. And just wow another earthquake off the coast of Northern California near where Freeper tubebender gardens. Winter is still hanging around. The Earth is still shaking. And more news or rumors about there being a shortage of vegetable seeds. There may be problems with certain varieties of cucumbers and carrots but I do not see a generalized shortage.
Small is beautiful (and radical)

So if we go back to the two questions about what is radical and what is beautiful they come down to the same thingthe passion for quality food and sustainable systems that the new young farmers brought to American agriculture. There is no reason that large farms, whatever path they may have been on, cannot learn to meet those standards if they understand that it is not the scale of the farm but the attitude of the farmer that the public is interested in. I think if the large farmers used all their experience and natural advantages to try to...
Seed shortages could imperil home gardens
Wednesday 17th of March 2010 07:06:00 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa - Dreaming of biting into a garden-fresh cucumber sandwich this summer? Better order your seeds now. A poor growing season last year and increased orders from Europe could make it difficult for home gardeners to get seeds for the most popular cucumber variety and some vegetables this spring. Farmers, who usually grow different varieties than home gardeners, aren't likely to be affected.

Good morning to all of you gardeners. I cant believe that January is half over! I am so ready for March to get here. Down here in my area of Mississippi we got up to 60 F yesterday and the forecast is for highs in the high 50s and 60s for the next week. I have not ordered my seeds yet. I had planned to wait until the end of January to place my orders. Election Symbolism: Coakley's Crack Down on Ladies Garden Clubs

It looks like someone in Massachusetts' senate candidate Martha Coakley's own Attorney General's Office is sabotaging her campaign. How else to explain the decision to send out threatening letters to the ladies garden clubs? These clubs volunteer their time and donate materials to beautify town squares, traffic circles and highway medians. According to the Boston Herald Coakley sent out threatening letters to at least 100 garden clubs across the state. A spokesperson in Coakley's AG office claimed they were not targeting the garden clubs in any way. In fact they were really trying to "help them." Don't you love it...
Israeli Scientist: Safe Pesticide from Deadly Scorpion Venom

Scorpions deliver a powerful, paralyzing venom â a complex cocktail of poisonous peptides that immobilize animal prey on the spot. Some of the toxins in a scorpion's payload damage only insects, which is why a Tel Aviv University researcher is harnessing them to create a safe and ecologically sound pesticide. Prof. Michael Gurevitz of Tel Aviv UniversityÂs Department of Plant Sciences has isolated the genetic sequences for important neurotoxins in the scorpion venom. HeÂs also developed methods to produce and manipulate toxins to restrict their toxicity in certain insects or mammals.

I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving Day and enjoyed a wonderful meal. It was a wonderful day here in East Central Mississippi sunny and mid 50s. Nice quiet day. I roasted our turkey breast side down and turned it over for the last hour and it turned out very nice! We had great sides of cornbread dressing, roasted butternut squash, homemade cranberry sauce, green beans and then egg custard for dessert. Now I need to start collecting the leaves off my lawn and add to the compost pile.
